Electrical Service

Prior to installing any major appliance such as a hot tub, first determine if the electric service in your home will handle the additional capacity. Since most homes built in the previous 30 to 40 years have at least 100 amp service, and 150-200 amp service in newer homes, this is usually not a problem. To find out the rating for your service panel, check near the top of the main breaker.

There is a common misconception that the total amperage of all circuit breakers installed in a panel must not exceed the service panel's indicated amp rating. This is false; capacity is determined by load calculations, not the size or number of breakers.

The hot tub circuit breaker in the service panel must be sized according to the spa's load requirement. The load rating of the disconnect box should be at least equal to, or greater than, this limiting breaker in the service panel. Nisat Electric can easily determine if your service panel will accommodate a new 240v circuit breaker.

The NEC, while having no legally binding regulation as written, is generally adopted by states and municipalities as the standards by which they enforce safe electrical practices within their jurisdiction.

Considered the benchmark for safe electrical installations, the NEC is published by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) every three years.
